Excited Shannon Dahlum Staying in Figure Division

Good Vibes: Shannon's feeling good about figure this year.

Checked in with the lovely Shannon Dahlum recently and got the scoop on her upcoming contest plans for the year. The Bayou State beauty will kick things off at the NPC Greater Gulf States Championship in Metairie, Louisiana just outside New Orleans on June 24th before heading to the national stage at the USAs back in Las Vegas on July 29th.

Shannon has an athletic background in gymnastics, swimming and lacrosse to go with a nice, muscular look highlighted by outstanding back and leg development. During her studio shoot at the Nationals in 2008, she was a bit of a tweener and her placings suggested streamlining her physique to fit the softer trend. With women’s physique in the mix, I asked if she planned to give the new division a try.

Back At It: After a strong finish last year, this could be a breakthrough season for Shannon.

“I’m going to stick with figure this year,” she said. “I feel like I’m finally starting to figure out how to train for it! I was excited to place in the top five at USAs last year so I’m going to keep at it and see if I can do it again this year!” Meanwhile, like most competitors, she’ll be keeping an eye on physique. “I’m anxious to see how physique goes this year,” Shannon added. “I was happy to hear that it was going to be added.”

Shannon’s decision to stay with figure brings up an interesting point. Somewhat overlooked during the gaggle of physique discussions is the impact the new division might have on figure. Physique will cut a slice out of figure’s numbers at most shows, giving more competitors a better shot at winning smaller classes if they are at their best mentally and physically on a given night. Not a wholesale change as much as a subtle shift, but one that could make a difference.
